Patachitra
Patachitra, a traditional art form from Pingla in Paschim Medinipur of West Bengal, has been conferred with Geographical Indication (GI). This unique craft combines Pata (scroll paintings) and “Pat-er Gaan” (songs), both depicting mythological stories from India.
The Patua community, consisting of itinerant scroll painters and singers, create these paintings on cloth using natural colours derived from fruits, vegetables, and flowers. With the support of Biswa Bangla’s market linkage approach, many Patua artists have gained secured livelihoods, helping to preserve and promote their distinct cultural heritage.
