Kalachakra simply means ‘The Wheel of Time’ or ‘Time Cycles’. It depicts a mythological reality of the cosmic and socio-historical events and is a bird’s eye view of the cosmic teachings with the 5 elements being depicted as outer rings. Each and every letter represents the heart syllable of deities. The 4 gateways surrounded by oceans and elaborate fences, leads to two more gateways till you reach the inner sanctum of deities represented by flower motifs.
The Kalachakra origins is in India with the original Sanskrit text of Kalachakra traditions existing since the early 11th CE, but the tradition has been carried out more famously in modern times by HH the 14th Dalai Lama by giving the 34th Kalachakra Empowerments till date, which is done all over the world bringing in hundreds of devotees together for world peace. The central deity is Kalachakra himself a manifestation of Buddha Aksobhya, and his consort Visvamata.
