- Madur weaving is an age old cottage industry of Medinipur. About 4000 Madur artisans earn their livelihoods by weaving these mats on simple bamboo frames. Warp is of cotton thread and weft is thin soft reed of Madurkathi, a grass weed. The superfine Masland mats, historically produced under royal patronage, are hand woven with silk yarn in weft. Biswa Bangla’s market linkage has helped regenerate interest in the labor intensive time consuming art of weaving Masland by making it remunerative. Products in this craft form range from regular floor mats to wall hangings to table mats etc.
