About Kantha

Nothing embodies women’s creativity better than the legendary Nakshi Kantha, a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Bengal. Originated as embroidered quilts about a thousand years ago, Kantha has been used to keep babies warm. This has with time developed into a full-fledged art, making way for the embroidery creating lines, fields of colour and motifs on diverse textiles. Biswa Bangla has worked together with thousands of craftswomen in Birbhum district. Design improvement and product diversification has reintroduced Kantha stitch on silk and cotton textiles, and home furnishing products.  Increased income has helped these women imbibe confidence, invest in education, nutrition, health and better sanitation.

About Bengal Muslin – Handwoven in Nadia & Murshidabad

Muslin is a closely woven, unbleached or white cloth produced from carded cotton handspun yarn. It originated in Bengal, from where it travelled to Europe in the 17th century. Muslin clothing is suitable for hot, dry climates.

West Bengal produces nearly 55% of the muslin produced in India. Efforts are being made to revive the fine muslin that was known worldwide. So far it has been possible to spin and weave 500 count muslin which is comparable to the famous Bengal muslin. The whole process needs a lot of skill and patience and only a very small quantity of 500 count muslin is produced in some areas of West Bengal.

The West Bengal Government has initiated Project Muslin to revive weaving of higher count muslin. Under this project, more than 600 families with skilled spinners and weavers have been identified in Murshidabad, Nadia, Birbhum, Bardhaman, Hooghly, Malda and Paschim Medinipur.

Handwoven:

  • Missing yarn, slobs and uneven yarn contrasts are general phenomena in hand-woven products. This is a natural outcome and inherent characteristic of the hand-weaving procedure which makes the products all the more unique and beautiful.

Handprinted:

  • Imperfections in hand-printing may be noticed, and colour may fade or bleed due to the traditional dyeing and printing processes employed.
